Even though the sport many think that all you need for swimming is a sturdy swimsuit and a pair of swim goggles to protect your eyes, the truth is a bit different. Taking just one glance at a pool deck during a swim practice will let you know that swimmers come prepared with the mesh swimming bags bursting with equipment. Here are some of the pieces of equipment that are essential for every swimmer.

Swimming goggles

We mentioned them in the introduction, so it is only fair to note them as the first item on our list. And based on their importance, it is a pretty well-deserved position. Every serious swimmer needs goggles, but not any old pair will do the job well. A good pair of goggles need to fit nicely around your face and stay in place as the water splashes around it, preventing any leaks.
The first known goggles used for diving and swimming were invented in the 14th century in Persia, and you can imagine how hard it was to find something waterproof and transparent back then. The solution smart people of that time came up with were polished tortoise shells. Today, the most professional models of swimming goggles come with UV protection, mirrored lens for glare reduction, enhanced peripheral vision, anti-fog properties, shatter resistance, and multiple nose bridge sizes for more comfort.

Swimming cap

The origin of the modern swimming cap is connected with the invention of rubber in 1883. Before that, swimming caps were a part of the swimming fashion. After that, the swimming caps are used to provide a smooth surface for maximum streamlining.
Professional swimmers often wear latex swimming caps because they grip the head very well, and the chances of that cap slipping off are very slim. Some even prefer to wear double caps: the first one is latex (to grip the head), and then silicone one over that, for optimal performance. Finding the perfect swimming cap for your needs might take some trial and error. It will take time to find the right fit, size, and material for you; keep at it and take advice from other swimmers.

Swimmer’s snorkels

A swimmer’s snorkel may not look much different from a regular snorkel to the untrained eye. However, the swimmer’s snorkel goes in front of the swimmer’s face, making it more balanced. This allows the swimmer to develop his/her strokes without interference, which improves the swimmer’s performance. A swimmer’s snorkel enables you to focus on your technique and strokes under the water without the need to come up for breath. It also helps keep your head straight.

Hand paddles

Hand paddles are tools that turn your hands into webbed limbs, like frog’s, and they are a piece of swimming equipment that can improve your swimming performance. Hand paddles isolate your upper body, which gives your shoulders and arms a serious workout, essential for every serious swimmer. Hand paddles also increase the strength and resistance of your pulls, which is beneficial for your technique.
